Comparative Literature (Master’s Program)

The Comparative Literature Master’s Program, which can be studied only at Ilia State University, offers students the opportunity to study literature as one of the main mediums of representation of cultural and value systems and to observe literature in both national and broader cross-cultural and global/transcultural contexts, which is a prerequisite for understanding foreign culture on the one hand and understanding one’s own culture in a unified world cultural context on the other.

The Comparative Literature program is for those who wish to:

  • Become familiar with approaches and methods of comparative study of literature and apply them to research current issues/problems in literary studies
  • Deepen knowledge of significant historical stages and latest trends in world literature; connect their relationship to socio-political contexts and philosophical-worldview paradigms.
  • Explore thematic, imagological, structural, epochal, genre, and aesthetic aspects of Georgian literature in relation to world literature trends.
  • Improve academic communication competencies by creating research work

 

Degree awarded: Master of Arts in Humanities in Comparative Literature

Language of instruction: Georgian

Program duration: 120 ECTS credits, 4 semesters

During the oral examination, candidates are assessed according to the following criteria:

  • Knowledge of the chosen field
  • Motivation
  • Academic/professional achievements
  • Communication skills
  • Knowledge of English at B2 level (assessed based on reading and comprehension of a field-specific text of appropriate difficulty)

 

The internal university exam assesses the candidate’s level of academic preparation and logical and critical thinking skills. To determine readiness and motivation for development, candidates must discuss their academic and professional goals, their motivation for applying to the program, and their expectations from the program (knowledge, experience, practical skills, etc.).

To complete Comparative Literature and obtain a Master of Arts in Comparative Literary Studies, students must accumulate 120 credits according to the following scheme:

Mandatory courses: 36 credits

Compulsory elective courses: 42 credits

Elective courses: no more than 18 credits

Master’s thesis: 24 credits

Institute of Comparative Literature

The university hosts the Institute of Comparative Literature, which organizes conferences and conducts research in fields such as:

  • Colonial/postcolonial Georgian literature (cultural paradigms, artistic models, textual implementations)
  • Contemporary literary studies – theories and methodologies, poetics
  • From modernism to postmodernism – from Europe to Georgia
  • Literature and totalitarian regimes; literature and anti-Semitism
  • The Black Sea as a literary and cultural space
